When pulled uniaxially to failure, metallic specimens undergo two periods of reversible elastic stress. The first occurs during the initial elastic portion of the stress-strain curve prior to the on-set of plastic deformation. The second occurs at the moment of fracture, as the strain applied to the specimen is rapidly and elastically released. Assuming near isentropic conditions, the effect is thermos-elastic cooling or heating depending on the sign of the stress. To identify and document this effect, tensile strength tests were performed and imaged by a highly sensitive Telops broadband infrared camera. Join us for a first look at these newly acquired measurements collected in collaboration with the University of Rochester’s Materials Science Program and Mechanical Engineering Department.

Thermal infrared imaging is a powerful tool for investigation flame dynamics in fire research applications. Depending on the type of information being sought in a combustion experiment, spatial resolution, spectral resolution, or thermal dynamic range can be crucial to elucidating certain properties of the burning material or the flame itself. Telops offers a range of infrared cameras to address these various needs. A multispectral camera equipped with a fast-spinning filter wheel can be used to detect gaseous combustion products using bandpass filters tuned to the spectral emission features of the target species. A super high-definition camera with a spatial resolution of 1920 X 1536 pixels can provide extremely fine detail in the image of the flame. For both types of cameras, the Telops unique global radiometric calibration allows automatic exposure control (AEC) to be used during data collection to minimize pixel saturation, even during very dynamic thermal events. Recent experiments will be presented to illustrate these capabilities and more. Anyone working in the field of fire or combustion research will benefit from learning about these advancements in infrared thermal imaging.

In this webinar, Telops Field Application Scientist Antoine Dumont will introduce how multispectral infrared imaging can be applied to fire science research. While not having the high spectral resolution of a hyperspectral system, a multispectral measurement allows for an easier identification of gas species for fast phenomenon through a high frame rate acquisition.

Multispectral thermal infrared imaging is therefore a versatile tool for the characterization and analysis of fire-related phenomena. We will demonstrate the strong potential of multispectral imaging data in making quantitative estimates of important quantities such as flame thermodynamic
temperature and concentration estimates of combustion gas species. Case studies of measurements taken in collaboration with Worcester Polytechnic Institute will show the ability of Telops’ multispectral cameras to do such a thing within varying scenarios.

Telops used the TESTD Active thermography system with a long wave and Mid wave IR camera for a non-destructive approach for characterization of multi-layered panel paintings and analysis of their defects caused by aging and environmental effects. Two oil compositions painted on canvas, provided by the Louvre Museum were inspected. Active Thermography was demonstrated as being appropriate for characterization of various defects on painting layers and detection of underdrawings, pentimenti and analysis of preparatory layers and canvas, thus providing valuable insights to heritage science and restoration community. This is a promising analytical method for paintings inspection and efficient methodology to obtain valuable information on historical paintings, their preparation and painting procedure, preservation conditions, and defect analysis. The obtained data can be stored as Artwork unique finger print, which can help the curator to follow, identify and document the artworks.

Sulfur oxide (SOx) from seagoing ships contribute to local air pollution in cities and coastal areas around the world. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in particular, are a precursor to acid rain and atmospheric particulates leading to ocean acidification which can contribute to negative human health outcomes1. The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) defines limits on the sulfur content in ship fuel oils, since the sulfur is ultimately released into the atmosphere through the ship’s exhaust system as sulfur dioxide (SO2). The current approved method to verify compliance to these limits requires direct sampling and analysis of on-board fuel storage tanks by regulatory personnel, a complex, time consuming and costly task. The use of remote hyperspectral imaging data along with signal processing techniques can provide rapid and accurate estimation of sulfur content in fuel oils. This webinar will describe how the Hyper-Cam, a hyperspectral camera, was used to detect, image and quantify SO2 emissions from several seagoing ships and then retrieve the sulfur content of the fuel. The sulfur content results obtained from the hyperspectral dataset compare very well to the sulfur content in the fuel obtained from bunker delivery notes provided by the ship’s owner as well as in situ measurements performed by an approved regulatory organization. This system offers a distinct advantage over existing, more complex, and time-consuming sulfur monitoring techniques as it does not require direct sampling of the fuel or the ship exhaust emissions.

In order to better understand the dynamic behavior of CFRP and to improve numerical modeling tools for these materials, it is essential to better understand the effects of strain rate on damage initiation and growth. Unlike low loading rate mechanical tests, the experimental setup for intermediate strain rate tests is classically based on servo-hydraulic actuators. The higher the loading rate of such test equipment, the more complicated, if not impossible, it becomes to interrupt the loading without resorting to complex experimental setups. Consequently, the observation and monitoring of damage in CFRP during these tests is difficult to achieve with the usual techniques: optical microscopy, X-ray, CT-scan. To overcome this problem, it is possible to use high-speed infrared thermography, for example, to monitor the appearance of transverse cracks in cross-ply laminates at different loading rates [1, 2] or even the growth of delamination during impact tests. The oil and gas industry uses flaring to dispose of methane and other hydrocarbons in a safe and ecologically sustainable manner compared to venting directly to the atmosphere. Under ideal conditions, this process is 98% efficient; however, under some conditions, this figure is significantly lower. Given that nearly 1 billion tonnes of methane is flared each year, and that each tonne of methane has a global warming potential nearly 28-36 times that of CO2 over 100 years, it is imperative to identify and correct flares that are operating under sub-optimal conditions.

History teaches us that major breakthroughs in science and technology are always tied to the capability to observe nature. Advancing measurement techniques is critical in any research field. In this talk, I will discuss the development of high-resolution infrared thermometry, and the use of this technique to shed light on physical phenomena, focusing on flow boiling heat transfer. Flow boiling plays a central role in light water reactors (LWRs) thermal-hydraulics due to its exceptional heat transfer efficiency. The outcome of flow boiling results from many intertwined parameters. I will show how to perform direct measurement of key flow boiling parameters on different types of surface in steady state heating conditions. I will leverage these measurements to develop better understanding for flow boiling heat transfer. The outcome of my research should bring about the valuable power uprates of current LWRs and the better design for advanced reactors.
